Everyone’s favorite appetizer, pigs in a blanket with a twist! Jumbo franks twisted in strips of puff pastry, melted cheese, and a sprinkle of seeds make it party ready!
Young or old, pigs in a blanket are everyone’s favorite party food. They’re not fancy, but damn are they good. Today we’re elevating these little piggies just a smidge with…
…cheddar cheese
…a crunchy, seeded topping and
…flaked sea salt.
Instead if using little smokies or even regular hot dogs, I recommend using jumbo franks when making pigs in a blanket with a twist. They have the best flavor and you’ll have the perfect ratio of frank to pastry.
Puff pastry is easy to find in the freezer section of your grocery store and one slightly rolled sheet is the perfect fit for one package of jumbo franks. I slice the puff pastry into strips (use a pizza cutter or sharp knife) and wrap two strips around each frank for maximum coverage.
The cheddar cheese is a tasty addition and the seeds and smoked sea salt dress up the pigs in a blanket and make them even a teensy bit adult. These are the perfect appetizer for your holiday party, Super Bowl, or just hanging out with a couple of cold beers and a movie over the weekend.
Word of advice though, consider doubling the recipe. These pigs in a blanket with a twist won’t last!!
Let’s Make Pigs in a Blanket with a TWIST!
- Lay the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface.
- Roll the puff pastry into a 10 x 12 rectangle.
- Slice into 8 strips.
- Wrap each frank in 1 1/2 slices of cheddar cheese. Brush two strips wit egg wash and wrap on strip around half of the frank.
- Roll the other half with the remaining strip.
- Repeat with the remaining franks, cheese, and puff pastry. Lay on a lined sheet tray.
- Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with seeds and salt.
- Bake until puffed and golden, slice and serve.
Tips for success
- I recommend jumbo franks for this recipe, but regular size franks can be substituted.
- These pigs in a blanket taste great with a mix of seeds and flaky sea salt. Use your favorites: poppy, sesame, anise, caraway, fennel, etc.
- Use a serrated knife to slice the wrapped franks into bite size pieces.
- Honey mustard tastes great for dipping, but any mustard or even ketchup will work too.
- This recipe doubles easily. Make extra, they go fast!
