Summer recipes should be simple, delicious, and ideally not require a hot oven, like these Italian-style BLT sandwiches. These sandwiches are layered with flavors and textures and punctuated with the powerful pop of Maille Old Style Mustard.

While mustard not be what you think of when you think BLT, I promise you it’s magic in this sandwich.

Unlike the classic BLT, this Italian-style version features boldly flavored ingredients like peppery arugula and piquant provolone.

Maille Old Style Mustard adds yet another layer of boldness and pairs perfectly with the crispy pancetta and vine-ripened tomatoes. This sandwich is super adaptable as well.

Bacon can be swapped for pancetta, creamy burrata for the provolone (for a milder flavor), or add a sprinkle of fresh basil.

I love to serve these BLT sandwiches in a make-your-own grazing board fashion for an easy summer meal. It works for casual dinner party or a family dinner al fresco (especially if you have a picky eater that eschews tomatoes).

Simply prep your ingredients and pile them onto a board or large serving platter and let everyone have at it, just don’t forget the Maille!

Tips for success

  • Can’t find pancetta? Regular bacon or crispy prosciutto would make tasty substitutions.
  • Toast the split rolls (cut-side down) in the pancetta drippings for extra flavor.
  • Prefer a milder cheese? Try fresh mozzarella or creamy burrata.
  • Don’t skip the mustard! The grainy texture and powerful punch of Maille Old Style Mustard gives this BLT extra zing.
