Homemade applesauce, cinnamon-ny and smooth is as easy to make as it is delicious to eat!
Have you ever made homemade applesauce? If not, stop right now and go grab yourself a bag of apples. Go. Now!
Once you make this for yourself and realize that it’s both simple to execute and delicious to eat, you’ll never, ever pick up that store-bought stuff again.
Plus the entire house smells like heaven when it’s cooking and you can make it just the way you like it…a little chunky, smooth as silk, cinnamon-ny, sweet or tart.
My choice? Liberally seasoned with cinnamon and other spices and pureed until smooth.
Of course, I always make enough to enjoy the next day with my breakfast too. I love a bowl of steel cut oats with homemade applesauce mixed in. Warm and satisfying, it’s my cold weather, warm-my-bones, go-to breakfast.
I always whip up a big batch, enough for all of us to share. It’s perfect for topping latkes over Hanukkah with plenty extra for breakfast the next day.
Let’s make Homemade Applesauce
- It’s sooo simple…combine everything in a saucepan and cover.
- Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer.
- Cook until tender, puree, and enjoy!
Tips for success
- You can use any of your favorite apples, but mix of varieties will be even more flavorful.
- I love the depth of flavor that apple cider and brown sugar impart, but regular granulated sugar and water will work as substitutes.
- For a more rustic or chunky applesauce, leave the skins on.

Sounds great and so easy to make. Who knew. I Will try to make it this weekend. Can you use any type of apple or do you recommend one? Thanks
Cathy says
I like a softer apple for applesauce. McIntosh and Cortland are pretty soft, Braeburn and Fuji are good options too.

Happy Hanukkah! I think it’s great you celebrate both holidays, I know when I was growing up I wanted to celebrate both, because my (half) sister got to celebrate both. I was always jealous. Lol. Anyways, my husband LOVES homemade applesauce, and my MIL always makes it for him. Now that I have this stellar recipe, I’m going to have to give her a run for her money! This looks delicious! Cheers, lovely!
